0G is pleased to announce its partnership with Mirror, providing data storage and data availability infrastructure to support Mirror’s Bitcoin staking infrastructure. Mirror allows BTC to be locked up in exchange for EVM-compatible mBTC, which can in turn be integrated into any PoS-based L1 or L2.
The partnership provides the necessary infrastructure for Mirror to access 0G’s data availability functionality, leverage 0G’s modularity for enhanced interoperability, enhance security via 0G Storage, and integrate with 0G-based AI models.
Bitcoin Staking
The Bitcoin network is inherently limited by its lack of smart contract functionality, with users limited to either holding or transferring assets.
Mirror allows for BTC to be converted 1:1 into mBTC, which is EVM compatible and can be deployed onto any PoS-based L1 or L2. This relies upon “groups” of 5 nodes that use a 3-of-5 multisig, with each node having 1 mBTC locked up as collateral. The number of groups required per transaction is dependent on the size of the transaction, such as a small transaction only requiring a single group to confirm the transaction (due to posted collateral).
This lays the necessary groundwork for Bitcoin DeFi, with mBTC capable of generating yield via lending protocols, liquidity pools, and so on. Furthermore, mBTC can also be used for restaking purposes, as the native gas of a PoS network, and can connect to EVM-based BTC L2 networks.
However, the partnership with 0G takes things much further. In particular, we see four major areas of benefit:
Data Availability: 0G’s data availability infrastructure enables cross-chain data transfers between the Bitcoin network and external networks. This enhances the efficiency, accessibility, and integrity of transmitting Bitcoin-network data across multiple blockchain networks, making it more reliable for various applications such as Bitcoin DeFi.
Interoperability Optimization: 0G is a Modular AI blockchain, which facilitates seamless connectivity between different blockchain networks. Similarly, MirrorL2 enables scalable integration of BTC into any PoS L1s & L2s. This means that MirrorL2 can leverage 0G to connect to even more networks, potentially opening up new use cases and enhancing user experience as well.
Enhanced Security: 0G’s on-chain database known as 0G Storage provides distributed data storage and management infrastructure. This increases the security of cross-chain transactions, reducing vulnerability to attacks or system manipulation. For example, 0G Storage can store each network’s state in real-time, ensuring that cross-chain transactions are securely executed.
New AI-Driven Products: 0G is capable of hosting on-chain AI models, meaning that there’s significant innovative potential for projects that combine 0G’s AI infrastructure with Mirror’s cross-chain BTC infrastructure. For example, AI-optimized cross-chain yield strategies for BTC could be deployed.
Given the fast-paced nature of the space, we also believe that many collaborative benefits are yet to be discovered but will arise in due course. For now, both parties are eager to work together to bring 0G’s data availability and data storage solutions to Mirror.
